News. Chronic Pain Conference to take place at Dumfries House

25th of August, 2021

The Prince’s Foundation in partnership with NHS GGC Centre for Integrated Health are hosting a two-day conference at the Health and Wellbeing Centre at Dumfries House from Friday 1st to Saturday 2nd October 2021.

Nationally there is now recognition that a more holistic and complementary approach, alongside conventional treatments, needs to be taken for the issue of chronic pain.

Our conference on Friday 1st October, includes expert speakers from across the UK including Dr. David McGavin, a GP with Special Interest in pain management at Kairos Rehabilitation Trust in Greenwich, London. The Trust takes NHS referrals for patients suffering complex pain. Kairos seeks to understand the human being in terms of physical, psychological and spiritual aspects in order to reduce the burden of symptoms and help further steps in personal development.

Also speaking is Dr. Nick Straiton, currently working for the NHS at the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine, who is particularly interested in mind body medicine and the treatment of stress related symptoms. His practice is holistic, and patient centred and uses acupuncture and osteopathy.

We also have local speakers who are using innovative ideas to deliver their service such as Gillian Collins, a Prescribing Support Pharmacist, pain specialist and yoga teacher with more than 20 years of experience, who is passionate about helping people manage chronic pain. Through her work for the NHS, she provides a free weekly yoga class for people with chronic pain via Zoom.

On Saturday 2nd October the focus is on finding ways to help manage chronic pain through a range of workshops and therapies.

Managing chronic pain is like a jigsaw puzzle. Pieces of the puzzle need to come together in order to move forward. Saturday gives those living with pain, their families and supporters an opportunity to find those pieces by experiencing a range of workshops across the day from gentle movement led by Scottish Ballet to singing and mindfulness to cognitive behavioural change with a little creative art included.
