Three compounding factors are changing our lives: by the year 2050, the global population will have risen from six to nine billion; the average temperature will have risen by between 2 and 6°C; and—without a technological breakthrough—depletion of oil and gas will have brought an end to cheap energy. Buildings and transportation make up more than half of carbon emissions, so finding practical solutions to this global catastrophe through smart development is essential.
Poundbury, the urban extension to Dorchester, England, is recognised worldwide as one of the most advanced solutions to urban settlement in the twenty-first century. It is used by the UK government as a model for new development and enhancing rural economies.
The Poundbury Series, launched in 2007, is a series of lectures and tours which are an essential experience for those involved in the planning, design and building of housing developments in the UK and beyond. Those involved in the development of Poundbury, along with other experts, will demonstrate through a series of lectures, workshops and visits how to implement these cutting-edge ideas. The underlying principles, established by the masterplanner, Léon Krier, and put into practise by the Duchy of Cornwall, will be analysed to help improve popular and specialist understanding of the place.

As the government and development industry search for an appropriate model for sustainable development in the twenty-first century, the Poundbury Series offers the opportunity to reflect on a model initiated by The Prince of Wales twenty years ago, which continues to gain credibility, not only in the UK but around the world.
- Who is the Poundbury Series for?
The course is tailored to all those working in the built environment implementing new town plans and urban extensions, including key decision-makers, design team members, house builders, developers, land owners, planners, architects, landscape architects, highways engineers, local politicians and council members.
- Why attend the Poundbury Series?
The built environment sector is awash with design guidance, codes and legislation to help deliver sustainable settlements, but very few new developments match their lofty aspirations. Poundbury stands out as a significant milestone in the consistent application of sustainable town-building principles.
- Are there other events on Poundbury and sustainable urbanism?
The Prince's Foundation offers a range of customised executive education courses, from half-day lectures to two-day sessions including site visits and workshops.
